“Superbug report not based on clinical evidence” (The Hindu 09 April 2011)

Delhi Health Minister Dr. A. K. Walia on Friday reviewed the issue of alleged superbug bacteria NDM1 in the city environment and its implications for human health at a meeting attended by Director (Health Services), senior functionaries of various hospitals and medical bodies and a number of public health experts and microbiologists from reputed organisations. After taking stock of the situation, Dr. Walia announced that there was no cause for worry as the alleged report was not significant as it was not based on any epidemiological or clinical evidence.

“Also chlorination carried out for making water safe for drinking inactivates sensitive and drug resistance bacteria alike. The chlorination of water makes it safe for drinking purposes. The water being supplied through the Delhi Jal Board and other similar sources meets the prescribed standards of testing and safety. ,'' said the Minister.
