“Jal Board supplying contaminated water” (The Hindu 22 June 2012)

Taking the Delhi Government to task, North Delhi Municipal Corporation’s Leader of the House Mahender Nagpal on Thursday said that the agreement signed between the Delhi Jal Board and a Singapore-based company to purify water confirms that the water supplied is contaminated.
Mr. Nagpal said under this agreement there is a plan to install water treatment plants to purify contaminated water. This is an indication that the DJB is supplying contaminated water to the residents, he said, adding that the Public Health Department has advised the DJB to rectify and improve the quality of water supplied following a report of the Corporation’s Public Health Department which found that out of 258 water samples 129 were unfit for consumption.
Mr. Nagpal said DJB collect samples only from those colonies from where water supply is better, whereas the civic body collects samples from areas all over its jurisdiction.
He said that the Delhi Government should accept the report of samples provided by the Corporation as an eye-opener.
