Ghaziabad too reels under water crisis (Hindustan Times 16 June 2012)

GHAZIABAD, June 16 -- In a city already reeling under long power cuts, the demand for water supply has exceeded by 100 million litres per day (MLD). The city's water table has also gone down by 20 feet in the past one decade.
Municipal officials said against a demand of nearly 504MLD of water, only 396MLD is being supplied to the city.
Areas such as Shalimar Garden, Rajendra Nagar are the worst sufferers - they are getting only an hour of water supply every alternate day. Lajpat Nagar and DLF Colony get one hour of water supply each day.
"Residents are forced to use submersibles, pumps and other measures," said Mithlesh Sharma, a Lajpat Nagar resident.
Areas such as Indirpuram, Kaushambi, Vaishali, Vasundhara and Delta-colonies are dependent on supply from the Pratap Vihar plant which can supply only 73MLD of water.
"Bore-well water is used in homes and we have to install RO systems to filter it from impurities," said SK Maheshwari from Delta colonies.
Corporation officials said water is supplied from around 360 tube-wells. They said frequent power cuts have aggravated the situation.
"Yearly, there is a 5% increase in water demand," said Babu Lal, general manager, water works.
Officials said they were in process of enhancing supply with the help of R44- crore project. Another project at Pratap Vihar is expected to supply around 100 qusecs of water, a majority of which will go to Noida.
